What keeps you from getting started on something you know you should do, perhaps even want to do?
Or perhaps it’s that you want to be able to say that you have done it!
Below are four reasons why people don’t get down to doing what they say they want to do. What’s yours?
- You feel like it’s a pointless exercise. You don’t know why you’d even do it, because you have ambiguous goals. You feel like you should be doing everything, which results in doing nothing. You don’t know what you should prioritize because you’ve never taken the time to identify the strategy that will get you from where you are now to where you want to be.
- You have no time. You’re really busy, but not necessarily with the “right things.” You allow trivial tasks–easy to check off but offering no sustainable impact–to get in the way of meaningful action. You cater to short-term emergencies instead of identifying a way to accomplish bigger objectives that might fall outside of your comfort zone.
- You’re afraid of failing. If you don’t ever start, you can’t fall short, right? Maybe what you’re really avoiding is how disappointed you know you’ll be when you put in a lot of effort (i.e. really and truly try your best) and still aren’t satisfied with what you achieve. If you don’t ever bring your ideal into the realm of the actual, it can remain picture perfect in your mind.
- You keep waiting for just the right circumstances. You tell yourself that if you’re going to invest the time and money into something, it needs to be exceptional. This means that you need to be ready. You need to feel energetic and motivated. You need to find the right window of time so that you can fully focus. You need to organize one more thing so that you have all of your ducks in a row before you begin.
No matter the reason—whether you’re feeling stuck, scared, uninspired or frenzied–nothing will make you feel better except doing the work.
